Bronco Billy hates to miss out on a stellar trail race, no matter how funny the name. You can follow him on his blog at www.
The lowest point is at Gold Lake, about 4, feet. After a few races are under the belt, a half marathon sounds like a reasonable challenge. The full marathon is a tougher sell, but if the half was successful, many runners like to step up to the challenge. Been there, done that? Well, then you should try an ultra, right? Or maybe try triathlon? Start easy, later move up to more and more difficult challenges. But why is it often done like that? Why do so many runners follow that exact same progression? Races have so many variables: distance, location, course, entry fees, weather, time of year, your age, your health, and your desire.
Why do athletes often avoid races that seem to have their names written on them? Even a beginner that has been training regularly and is in respectable running shape will have several disadvantages compared to a runner that has been training, and racing, for years. Veterans have a psychological edge in this category as well. Most runners can tough out a 5K, or even a 10K, but half marathons, marathons and ultras ultimately become as much a mental struggle as a physical one.
What does this all mean? LEFT: Road courses vary greatly from their off-road counterparts. Thankfully the Northwest dishes up a large variety of both types of races each year. Keep in mind that these spectacular views are often coupled with challenging terrain and may not yield a personal best performance on race day. Climate is an interesting category. Should you consider race day weather?
Yes, but mainly as a general, hoping-for-the-best type of contemplation. When looking at a single day, weather is fickle, especially in the Northwest. If you enjoy running in dry, warm weather, then do not schedule your goal race in. Mud runs and costumed Halloween and Christmas races are wonderful races to happily run with a large group of friends. Looking for a fast race with serious competition?
Those races tend to. Some people have frighteningly strong feelings on this topic. The sport itself is expensive, with three events to shop for including a bike , and the entry fees can be terrifying. Unique vs. Common Both personal preference and personal goals come into play for this one. Unique races are exciting, fun, inspire camaraderie and enthusiasm…and are usually slow paced.
How about a regular, old loop course 5K on flat, paved roads? Also yes. But for some runners, nothing is more interesting and fun than setting a new PR. Healthy vs. Injury-Prone This one is actually trickier than it might seem. You need to know your own body, your injury history and your comfort level on the roads and off. On the other hand, racing on the trails can bring a different set of potential injuries to the fore: trips, falls and twisted ankles being much more common during trail races than road races. For the best of both worlds, schedule slower training runs off-road, while planning races on the smooth, consistent pavement.
Free Time vs. That will just lead to disappointment; likely even before you hit the start line, but definitely on the race course itself. Here are just a few of the hurdles: jet lag, unfamiliar food and water, strange beds and sleeping hours, unfamiliar weather and race courses. Race Success vs. Something New Should you continue to concentrate on your sport and improve, even if it takes years and years of monotonous training and effort?
Some runners qualify for the Boston Marathon on their first try, others struggle, and fail, race after race and year after year. Fighting through adversity and finally reaching a lifetime goal is an extraordinary achievement but it comes with a flip side. Unless you enjoy the process, that is, the actual training and racing while potentially not hitting your goal, then maybe you should give a little time for something new.
Make a complete break. Time of year is just one of the factors that should be taken into consideration when selecting a race. Many events, like the popular Columbia Gorge Marathon, are staged in the fall, yielding cooler race day temperatures. Who knows, it may rekindle your fire to hit your running goals again or it might just introduce you to a new sport that you love even more! Study all your options and write down a list of your running preferences.
Some may not mesh well with others. Give the race director a call if you have questions. Ask members of a local running club what they think of the race. Pick a race far enough into the future to get a solid training base. Commit to your training. Make that next race count. Professional triathletes like Jesse Thomas, Heather Jackson, Matt Lieto, world class runners such as Max King and Lauren Fleshman and national champion mountain bikers Adam Craig and Carl Decker all live and train in Bend because of its attractive climate, trail systems, natural beauty, and more.

Running, like so many other things in life, tends to work better with a plan. Picking Goals Each year, as the running season winds down, I take some time to reflect on the past season. Examining the big picture, rather than isolated events, can help me see trends or patterns. I start by thinking about a one-word mantra or a phrase that will set the tone. It helps to do a brainstorming session during this phase to get my thoughts flowing.
I use lots of charts, balloons, lists, and arrows when I scribble down my thoughts. From this scrawled list of ideas, I refine my thoughts into more realistic, tangible goals that I can work towards. I try to set goals that challenge me, but are also attainable with hard work and dedication.
To do. Stacking races is common in. When it comes to planning, Stephanie emphasizes structure and the importance of writing your goals down on paper. A goal without a plan is like trying to build a house without any blueprints. Where do you start? If there are no guidelines or methodological approach to your training, you are less likely to be successful. No matter what your goal, write your plan out on paper.
The physical act of writing down your plan makes it more real and holds you accountable.
Start by writing out the key dates or races that you will focus on. From there, outline how you will prepare for each event. If you are preparing for a longer race, how will you increase your mileage while still allowing for recovery? Knowledge about the principles of training or exercise physiology is useful for performance goals. Some runners seek out coaches for help with these types of goals. These events may interfere with your ability to train or more importantly, to recover.
