Slay sings sitting in a rickety rocking chair, and the duo will bring on different instruments, like a harmonica and washboard, or found objects to use as percussion.
They dress in floppy hats, overalls and clunky work shoes. On record, the band similarly tries to re-create the atmosphere and spontaneity of a 's front-porch jamboree.
Slay's voice growls and then jumps in little whoops and hollers; in songs like "Omaha," from the Mudd Puppies' second and latest release, "8-Track Stomp" Polygram , he sounds as though he's singing through a crackly transistor radio. The lyrics are mostly pastiches of details of people and places: wasps, cicadas, waterfalls, crows and other ephemera of Southern living. The band came together three years ago while Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Slay were art students at the University of Georgia in Athens. I always had weird rusty objects and nostalgic Southern junk that most people would pass by.
It just became our little trademark. The musical end came from the pair's interest in Delta blues artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, as well as "field recordings of real obscure blues artists," Mr. Slay said. Slay is quick to point out that the Mudd Puppies are not trying to be authentic blues artists: "We never want to be seen as the two white boys trying to do this typically black style of music. Reverence for the Past.
The Pussywillows, a New York-based group built around the three-part vocals of Lisa Jenio, Elinor Blake and Lisa Dembling, have a similar reverence for a different rock-and-roll institution: the girl group. The vocals are styled identically to classic 's girl groups like the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes, and during live shows the three singers, who do not play instruments, line the front of the stage wearing thrift-store dresses. The band's only release to date, a EP called "Spring Fever" on the Hoboken label Telstar, plays up the comparison to the hilt: most of the songs are versions of songs by obscure 60's girl groups like the Cinderellas and the Coupons, and on the cover the singers jump around a beach wearing pedal-pushers.
Since then, though, the Pussywillows have grown a bit, and their current live set includes spirited originals like "Vindaloo," a song about a girl in an Indian musical.
