see url Clean and Well Maintained Trains also. Two Hours from Brekenridge but definately worth the trip.
It is a fairly long ride, and we were going up backwards. Lots of beautiful photo ops. We have nice people to chat with on the way up. We had wanted to take the grandchildren but our time issues prevented that and we were really glad it did. I don't think it would have been appropriate for them -- they were 3 and 6.
Too long a ride up and more than that I think I would have been totally beside myself. I can remember when we visited the Grand Canyon our 2 youngest were with us and I was concerned then -- they were 10 and When we got up to the top it had clouded up, was very windy and starting to lightning which I understand happens fairly often up there. And if you're like me and scared by lighting and thunder even at dfw texas elevations then u will be freaked up there like I was. That was possibly the only time since I have been heavy that I felt it an asset.
That wind made me feel that if I only weighed s like I used to that I'd been blown right off this very small flat place on the mountain top. I made a beeline for the store and stayed there until the storm passed and our train was totally ready to leave. My husband ribbed me a little, but I didn't care. I've never experienced anything like it and I've been to see the Royal Gorge several times and once in a storm, too. I'm surprised that I've never heard of any accidents up there, like I have at the Grand Canyon.
I guess I can't not recommend it but definitely with some reservation. I think one should consider to whether it's appropriate for you and the rest of your party.
Happy with this historic hotel Staff was beyond friendly, hotel is quaint Thank GaryImperial. Colorado Springs Adventures. I liked that I didn't have to drive all the way to the top! Easy peasy! When we got up to the top it had clouded up, was very windy and starting to lightning which I understand happens fairly often up there.
My husband would probably rate it a 4 or 5 -- he isn't such a scardy cat. We went in early October during a freak cold spell. However, it's quite uncomfortable. You are seated knee-to-knee with either three other people or two other people depending on the side of the car.
The seats are hard, straight and also quite uncomfortable. Sardines is the word that comes to mind. Also, the ticket office is highly unorganized and slow. Otherwise you may very well get stuck standing in a maddening slow line while your train boards.
There were customers who were so mad, I thought there was going to be a shoving match. Here is a fun attraction that really has its act together.
Pike's Peak is over 14, feet high and far above the tree line. It can be seen from miles around.
Strange fact, its namesake never climbed to the top. We arrived around 30 minutes before departure, picked up our tickets and used the bathroom.
They keep the crowds well organized. The seats on the trains are reserved, so no need to rush. Our train left on time and our host provided a funny running commentary as we made our way to the top. The trains were built in Switzerland, are well kept and the crews are very professional. In mid August the town of Manitou Springs was very warm, but the peak was forty degrees. You are warned to bring warm clothing - do it. It can be very windy and the weather can change quickly. The views make it worth it. At the top is a very large gift shop with food available.
They make a special donut -- try them!
Pay attention to your departure time as most trains are sold out in the high season. Like trains or not, the cog railway is the best way to get to the top and back again. What a "cool" experience! The conductor knew lots of historical facts and identified points of i nterest.
Our train did not make it to the summit due to 7 foot snow drifts. The snow was right up to the windows of the train! We had an opportunity to get out of the train, and play in the snow :.
