But where is the fun in that?
Barbados is an island that likes to take things slowly. Nobody is in a hurry, everybody just takes things in their stride and at their own pace. Being such a small island means that generally speaking within a couple of hours of that plane landing you are at your hotel or villa, whether you have chosen to stay in the capital Bridgetown, in the bustling area known as The Gap, in surfers paradise on the Atlantic Coast, or an all inclusive resort on the Caribbean. You will have landed around 3pm there are daily direct flights with both BA and Virgin Atlantic from the UK and by 6pm you can have a cold Banks in your hand watching the sunset.
What to do on each day of your holiday can be dependent on the weather. Unlike some other Caribbean islands, Barbados can be rainy, especially in the summer. Barbados though is famous for its beaches and if you want to lie on a golden sandy beach under the shade of trees, you can do just that.
In fact you could do that every day for a fortnight and not sit on the same beach twice. There are deserted beaches and there are beaches that have a bar where a waiter will bring you an ice cold drink right down to your sun lounger.
Or if lying around is not your thing, there are world class golf courses, scuba diving lessons, water sports, horse riding the list of more athletic activities is endless. For me though my perfect day is spent on a glass bottomed boat out on the sea. There are several spots along the Caribbean coast where turtles like to play and are happy for you to join them off the side of your boat.
As you snorkel they will come and pose for your underwater camera so if you have a waterproof video camera, do take it with you. A sunken ship just off the famous Sandy Lane beach is the perfect spot for you to get up close and personal to fish, though if you would rather watch from a safe distance take a couple of slices of bread and feed them from the side of the boat, but have your camera ready! As the sun sets and you come back into shore it is time for a cocktail on the beach to watch the sun go down. The bar is right on the beach, with steps down to the sand so you either sit at the bar, or lean against the palm tree as you see the sun disappear on the horizon.
For dinner you can either stay there their pizzas are legendary, as is the coconut shrimp or take a short stroll to Tides. The food is Michelin quality and the service is second to none, with a great list of non-alcoholic cocktails for children too. Though if that is slightly out of your budget then how about going down to Enterprise Beach where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean so the waves make it perfect for body boarding, and buying a bag of fish balls from Mr Delish? Stunning white sand beaches, turquoise waters and some of the finest rum on the planet, it is easy to see why Barbados is so popular.
