The impact of the injury can range from effecting your thoughts, feelings, emotions, to changing social dynamics and your overall psyche. These are not signs of weakness but an indication that this particular athlete may need more support to cope well.
Remember that it is common to cycle through all of these emotions and still do well. Support can make the process more manageable. I believe that it was the combination of my physical training along with some mental training that helped me to compete at the Division I level and be part of an amazing team that won multiple Big 10 championships.
